The Mission Neighborhood Health Center (MNHC) is a non-profit, multi-site community health organization offering comprehensive health services in the Mission and Excelsior Districts of San Francisco.  The center offers primary health care services, adult medicine, pediatrics, family planning, OB/GYN, HIV and homeless services. We advocate for health equity and deliver innovative, high-quality services responsive to the neighborhoods and diverse communities we serve.

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for our Controller position. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is a regular, full Time, exempt role with a salary range of $159,324 to $175,236 with full benefits.

Primary Objective:
Under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller provides financial leadership and oversees day-to-day accounting functions, ensuring compliance with GAAP, integrity, timely financial reporting, and strong internal controls. Responsibilities include managing month- and year-end close processes, tax reporting, grant budgets and invoices, payroll, accounts payable, procurement, and preparation of audit worksheets. The Controller supervises six or more direct reports and must be able to perform all roles as backup to streamline processes and improve efficiency.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
Supervision - 30%

  • Oversee payroll, grant management, accounts payable, and purchasing functions, ensuring all bills, expense reports, timesheets, and other payments are processed accurately and on time.
  • Manage accounts receivable, prepare grant budgets, receivables, and revenue reports, ensure compliance with regulations, and provide guidance to Program Directors regarding their grants.
  • Take ownership of all term-end close activities.
  • Coaches and educates staff on policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Evaluates direct reports within designated time frames, providing ongoing feedback, coaching, and supervision.

Primary Functions - 70%

  • Close the books each month and at year-end, ensuring proper recognition and recording of all financial transactions on schedule.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations for all balance sheet and other accounts, as well as monthly financial reports for board committees and other special reports.
  • Maintain third-party and patient pay revenue reconciliations, supervise the fixed assets system, and coordinate the annual physical inventory process.
  • Prepare and submit all federal, state, and local tax returns, ensuring compliance with applicable policies, and act as the primary specialist for tax reporting requirements.
  • Ensure all schedules and work papers are prepared for the annual financial and 401K audits and lead financial audits in coordination with external auditors.
  • Manage reporting functionality in Abila MIP accounting software, including creating reports, updates, and maintenance.
  • Assist leadership in annual budgeting and planning, administering and reviewing financial plans, and analyzing variances between actual results and budgets.
  • Perform other financial or operational activities as assigned by the CFO.

Skills and Abilities:  

  • Independent thinker with excellent customer service skills, professional attitude, high personal integrity, maturity, and strong business judgment.
  • Able to multitask, prioritize, meet deadlines, deliver presentations, and handle information confidently; demonstrates strong analytical skills, keen attention to detail, and hands-on experience managing multiple grants from diverse funding sources in compliance with GAAP and A-133.
  • Effective supervisor with the ability to oversee and guide staff.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; well-organized professional who thrives in a team-oriented, multicultural environment and maintains a tactful, professional demeanor under pressure.
  • Deep understanding of US GAAP and nonprofit accounting, with the ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels, including both finance and non-finance managers.

Qualifications Requirements

  • Bachelor‘s degree in accounting required
  • CPA Licensure required.
  • Required over 8+ years of overall accounting experience with 3+ years of experience as a Controller and manager in the finance department of a nonprofit, preferably with healthcare experience.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit approximately 80% of the time, walk 10% of the time, and stand 10% of the time. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to type or handle, feel, and operate objects. The employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to speak and listen. Specific vision abilities of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
